What the state lookup doesn't show you
Each state board's own lookup shows a license's current status. Before you sign a bid, check these three records too.
- Discipline history
- Fines, restitution orders, probation and past suspensions from the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board’s published discipline reports, shown even on licenses that read “current” today.
- Bond and workers' comp
- The CSLB's current file shows 7,503 California licenses suspended for a lapsed contractor's bond and 2,910 for workers' comp. Every California record here shows both.
- Every license they hold
- 20,911 people in the Florida DBPR file hold more than one contractor license. We list them together.
Got a bid in hand? Look up the license number on it.
California (Bus. & Prof. Code §7030.5) and Florida (Fla. Stat. §489.119) require contractors to print their license number on bids, contracts and advertising. Search it here, then confirm on the board's official record before you pay a deposit.
