Before you hire in Florida

  • Florida has two kinds of contractor license: Certified (valid statewide) and Registered (valid only in the local areas where the contractor holds a local license).
  • Disciplinary actions below come from the Construction Industry Licensing Board's published discipline reports (fiscal years 2022–2026).
  • A license can be current and still carry a history of fines, restitution or past suspensions. That history is what this page adds to the state's own lookup.

Florida contractor license questions

How do I check if a contractor is licensed in Florida?

Search the business name, the license holder's name or the license number above. Each record shows the license type, status and expiration from the DBPR's construction license file, plus any Construction Industry Licensing Board discipline. Then confirm it on the DBPR's own license search before you sign. Florida Statutes §489.119(5)(b) requires the license number on every offer of services, proposal, bid, contract and advertisement.

What is the difference between a certified and a registered contractor in Florida?

A certified contractor holds a state certificate of competency and "shall be allowed to contract in any jurisdiction in the state" (Florida Statutes §489.105(8)). A registered contractor met a local jurisdiction's competency requirements and "may contract only in such jurisdictions" (§489.105(10)). In the DBPR file, most certified license numbers start with C (CGC is a certified general contractor) and registered ones start with R.

Do contractors have to be licensed in Florida?

Yes. Florida Statutes §489.113(2): "A person must be certified or registered in order to engage in the business of contracting in this state."

How many licensed contractors are there in Florida?

The DBPR's construction license file dated Nov 3, 2026 lists 135,812 licenses, of which 120,343 are active. The file includes Construction Financial Officers, who are licensed by the same board but don't contract on their own.

Are contractor disciplinary records public in Florida?

Yes. The Construction Industry Licensing Board publishes its final orders in discipline reports for each fiscal year. This site carries 5,282 actions from the reports for fiscal years 2022–23 through 2025–26, and leaves out cases the board dismissed or closed without discipline.
